2024 National Work Zone Awareness Week

Join Road Worx in recognizing the significance of National Work Zone Awareness Week, taking place from April 15-19, 2024.

This annual event unites communities across our nation to shed light on the importance of work zones and the critical need for safe driving practices in these areas. Throughout the week, esteemed organizations like the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), National Safety Council (NSC), and American Traffic Safety Services Association (ATSSA) collaborate to champion safety initiatives and educate drivers on the inherent risks within work zones.
Understanding the gravity of work zones and the potential hazards is paramount. Work zones are dynamic spaces designed for the repair and maintenance of roads, bridges, and transportation infrastructure as well as new framework including utilities such as water, gas, electric and communications. These areas often involve adjusted speed limits, lane closures, and detours that may pose challenges for drivers. Additionally, the presence of workers, heavy equipment, and materials heightens the risk, necessitating heightened caution from both drivers and workers.

To actively participate in National Work Zone Awareness Week, consider the following tips and actions:

Stay vigilant in work zones: Remain alert while driving and adhere to posted speed limits and signs within work zones. Given that conditions can change rapidly, stay focused on the road and be prepared to adjust your speed accordingly.
Plan your route: Before embarking on your journey, check for potential roadwork or construction along your route. Plan for possible delays and explore alternative routes to minimize disruptions.
Practice patience and courtesy: While work zones can be frustrating, it's crucial to recognize that workers are striving to complete their tasks safely and efficiently. Maintain composure, exercise patience, and provide workers with the space they need.
Raise awareness: Share information about National Work Zone Awareness Week within your social circles. Encourage friends, family, and community members to be mindful of work zones and champion safe driving habits.
Engage on social media: Stay informed about work zone safety tips and events throughout the week by following organizations like FHWA, NSC, and ATSSA on social media. Just please do not do this while operating vehicles.

Recognizing National Work Zone Awareness Week presents an opportunity to champion safe driving practices, fostering a protective environment for both workers and drivers. By adopting these guidelines and spreading awareness, we contribute to the collective effort to minimize accidents and ensure the safety of all travelers. #NWZAW2024

Road Worx Hits the Mark:

Road Worx recently attended a Sporting Clays event as part of our continual support of the American Traffic Safety Services Association (ATSSA). This dynamic event not only showcased our commitment to community engagement but also highlighted the critical work of ATSSA and its charitable arm, the ATSS Foundation.

The American Traffic Safety Services Association (ATSSA) is a nationally recognized organization dedicated to advancing roadway safety through the promotion of innovative products, services, and technologies. ATSSA brings together professionals from various sectors, including transportation, engineering, and public safety, to collaborate on developing and implementing effective strategies to enhance roadway safety across the United States.

ATSSA plays a pivotal role in shaping industry standards, advocating for policies that prioritize safety, and providing education and training programs to equip professionals with the knowledge and skills needed to address the challenges of modern traffic safety.

Advocacy: ATSSA actively engages with government agencies and policymakers to influence legislation and regulations that prioritize roadway safety. Through advocacy efforts, the organization aims to create a safer environment for both motorists and those working in the transportation industry.

Education and Training: ATSSA provides a range of educational programs and training initiatives to equip individuals with the latest knowledge and best practices in traffic safety. This includes courses on work zone safety, sign installation, and the proper use of safety equipment.

Industry Collaboration: ATSSA serves as a platform for professionals to collaborate and share insights, fostering innovation in the development and implementation of safety solutions. The organization hosts events, conferences, and exhibitions that bring together industry leaders, experts, and stakeholders.

Complementing ATSSA's mission is the ATSS Foundation, the charitable arm of the organization. The foundation is committed to supporting the families of those who have lost their lives or have been seriously injured in work zone incidents. Additionally, it works to promote roadway safety awareness and education. By participating in and sponsoring the Sporting Clays event hosted by ATSSA, we demonstrate our dedication to the values of safety and community engagement. Sporting Clays, a sport that simulates bird hunting, provided a unique and enjoyable way for our chapter to come together in support of a common cause.

By supporting organizations like ATSSA and the ATSS Foundation, we play a vital role in shaping a safer and more secure future for everyone who travels our nation's roadways.

Area Lighting For Nighttime Work Areas

According to the MUTCD Section 6F.82:
Standard:
03 Except in emergency situations, flagger stations shall be illuminated at night.
04 Floodlighting shall not produce a disabling glare condition for approaching road users, flaggers, or workers.

It is imperative in the traffic control industry that we follow the standards that the Federal Highway Administration has put in place in the MUTCD. We are all in this industry to provide a service that intends on delivering safety to our employees, our clients and the travelling public regardless of how they are travelling.

The reason that working at night can be so dangerous is that our vision is greatly reduced while travelling and we rely on the reflection of light so that we can properly see. The MUTCD provides plenty of standards that can help travellers see the work at night from retroreflective safety apparel to retroreflective tape on devices used within the TTC Zone. The most beneficial way to allow the travelling public to see better however is the use of area lighting. There are many ways to achieve area lighting. The most common form is a pull-behind trailer that has a diesel generator and a light tower that cranks up into the air 30-50 feet so that the lights can be aimed down so as to not provide the disabling glare to road users per the MUTCD Standard. The greatest problem with this is the flood light produces a concentrated beam of light towards a specific area and it may take multiple tries to get the light situated such that the light does not provide the glare to road users. Typically these lights are used to illuminate both the work as well as the flagger stations. The wider the lights are splayed, the greater chance that the travelling public will be blinded.

So how should we provide safety in a Temporary Traffic Control Zone in dim or dark conditions? We should mitigate the above issues by utilizing balloon lighting. We have partnered with Airstar so that our customers can have the best options available. Airstar products offer several benefits that make them a compelling option for various applications. Here are some reasons why you should consider buying Airstar balloon lights through us:

Portable and Easy to Set Up: These balloon lights are designed to be portable and user-friendly. They provide bright and even lighting, creating a well-lit environment for any task or event.

Energy-Efficient: Airstar Lighting balloon lights are designed with energy efficiency in mind. They are made from robust materials that are resistant to water, wind, dust, and other elements, ensuring reliable performance even in challenging environments. Additionally, Airstar balloon lights are often compliant with relevant safety standards and regulations.

Customization Options: Airstar offers a range of customization options to meet specific lighting needs. They have a track record of delivering reliable products that meet the demands of various industries. Choosing Airstar means you can rely on their performance and longevity.

Airstar is the innovator of the inflatable, non-glare technology.
WZSSF Charity Poker Tournament

Our National Planning Manager Rich Royce tied for first place in this year's WZSSF Charity Poker Night!

Each year, to close out National Work Zone Awareness Week
#NWZAW Colorado Barricade holds a Charity Poker Tournament.
As a company that believes in the intrinsic value of safety in every work zone, Road Worx has helped sponsor the event for the past two years and we plan to continue supporting the cause in the future.

WZSSF stands for Work Zone Safety & Support Fund.

Captured from the CCA website:

In an effort to better support our industry the Associate Council created a fund to support individuals and families affected by work zone fatalities and critically injured.
According to Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT), about 600 people die and more than 37,000 people are injured every year in work zone crashes nationwide. Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) embarks on hundreds of construction projects across the state and that does not include the numerous maintenance activities that are conducted every day to keep our highways safe. With every construction zone comes equipment, workers and daily changes in the road and alignment you may be traveling. As a result, it is critical that everyone does their part to make the cone zones safe. Lower speed limits, flaggers and police enforcement are all used to help keep work zones safe, but motorists still need to drive responsibly to keep not only our workers safe, but yourself as well.

Road Worx would like to acknowledge all of the winners, unfortunately we do not have the names or companies represented of the other two individuals.

CONGRATULATIONS!!

Please join us as we take a Moment of Silence for those who lost their lives too early. Over the years, thousands of men and women have died in work zones including workers, motorists, cyclists, pedestrians, law enforcement officers, public safety officials and children. We are in this industry to protect everyone. Please take a moment to think of your loved ones, be it your spouse, parents, children or friends. Those are the people that we are charged with to protect in work zones. We can all do our part by being cautious and slowing down in work zones. #NWZAW

2023 National Work Zone Awareness Week

You play a role in work zone safety. Work with us!
Please join Road Worx in observing National Work Zone Awareness Week April 17-21st 2023.

National Work Zone Awareness Week is a yearly event that takes place all over our beautiful country. This week-long campaign aims to raise awareness of work zones and the importance of safe driving in these areas. During this time, organizations such as the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), National Safety Council (NSC), and American Traffic Safety Services Association (ATSSA), come together to promote safety and educate drivers about the dangers of work zones.

First and foremost, it's crucial to understand the importance of work zones and the risks involved. Work zones are temporary traffic control areas created to repair or maintain roads, bridges, and other transportation infrastructure. These zones often involve reduced speed limits, lane closures, and detours that can cause confusion and frustration for drivers. In addition, the presence of workers, heavy equipment, and materials can create hazardous conditions for both drivers and workers.

To observe National Work Zone Awareness Week, here are some tips and actions you can take:

Be mindful of work zones: When driving, always be alert for work zones and follow posted speed limits and signs. Remember that work zones can change quickly, so stay focused on the road and be prepared to slow down or stop.

Plan ahead: Before heading out, check for any roadwork or construction in your route and plan for potential delays. Consider alternate routes if possible.

Be patient and courteous: Work zones can be frustrating, but remember that workers are doing their best to complete the job safely and efficiently. Stay calm, be patient, and give workers the space they need.

Spread awareness: Share information about National Work Zone Awareness Week with your friends, family, and community. Encourage others to be mindful of work zones and promote safe driving practices.

Follow social media: Follow organizations such as the FHWA, NSC, and ATSSA on social media to stay up-to-date on work zone safety tips and events happening throughout the week.

Observing National Work Zone Awareness Week is an opportunity to promote safe driving and protect workers and drivers alike. By following these tips and spreading awareness, we can help reduce the number of accidents and fatalities in work zones and ensure everyone arrives at their destination safely.
#NWZAW

TCP Requests

The image here shows typical traffic control closure types outside of the generic full road closure. When you submit a plan request, it helps us to know what type of traffic control you are looking for. If you are unsure, do not worry, our Planning & Permitting Coordinator, Luke Mauser can help determine the correct closure based on the type of work you will be doing and some minor details about your work area.

Some of the details we are looking for are:

Project Address, Cross Streets or Coordinates nearest where the project will take place.
Work area of which you wish to shut down for your project.
	What your company specializes in.
How much additional space (if any) will you need?
How long is the project expected to last?

Coordinates:

This will help us find your project area on our mapping program so that we can get the best data to provide you the most recent and correct traffic control based on the most current lane alignments for the area you will be working at.

Work Area:

This will be which lane(s) you are planning on working in. Will you need the sidewalk closed? Depending on what your company specializes in you may need multiple types of closures all in one plan. For a crane operation, it is important that we close down the sidewalk where the crane will be lifting materials over so that in the case of an emergency a pedestrian does not get injured or worse. On the other hand, if you only need Manhole access in the right lane of a road with multiple lanes in the same direction, we may not need to shut down the sidewalk. If we know you will be excavating a deep hole in extreme proximity to the travelling public, we may need to plan for concrete barriers as opposed to the typical channelizing devices.

Specialization:

This tells us how to design your traffic control based on the area you are working in. If you are doing a vertical bore (drill) for earth remediation, less space will be required than if you are doing a horizontal bore for utility placement in which we would need to provide space for a bore pit as well as the long machine that will be doing the drilling. The more we know about what you do (and what this project entails) the faster that we will be able to produce a traffic control plan.

Additional Space:

If you will require additional space for employee vehicles or specialized equipment, please let us know so that we can plan for it in your TCP. This will help the public utility engineers in the jurisdiction you plan on working in what to expect with your project and exactly how it will affect the travelling public. If you are doing work on a narrow residential road and only want to close the shoulder / parking lane, you may need to partially park on the sidewalk. Some juridictions may be perfectly okay with this, while others might have weight restrictions on the sidewalk requiring a different type of closure.

Time Frame:

This will also help us determine the best traffic control to use for your situation. On a long-term traffic control project, we may need to use concrete barriers to contain your work area. Likewise, some projects where you only need access to a manhole for 5-10 minutes may be better set as a mobile closure so that you are not waiting for 30+ minutes for your traffic control to be set up for a minimal project. For a sewer repair in a residential neighborhood, you may need a One Lane Road for the day, however a company running aerial fiber across a street may only require a couple of flaggers to stop traffic before moving to the next location.

In every case, letting us know how you would like us to tackle your project will help us get your plan out the way that you expect it to work so that your Right of Way permit is approved the first go-around.

If you have engineering CADs, Google images with highlighted work areas or .pdf's with notations on where you are planning on working and what you are doing, that will also help us out. As they say: a picture is worth a thousand words. You can send us traffic control plan requests directly to us via email plans@road-worx.com or by submitting via our online form here.
